“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
Audre Lorde
I was reading a journal post earlier and this quote grabbed my attention. As an avid reader, I’m ashamed to admit that I know very little about the author but her words speak volumes. There are some people in this world who have mastered the art of self-preservation. Most of us, however, are still learning to balance this act while caring for others. Often times we care about everyone we come in contact with to the point of losing ourselves. Supporting others can leave you drained like an empty tank of gas. This is a lesson I learned the hard way but I’m glad I did. Caring for yourself may seem selfish to some but it is so necessary.
While you’re out saving the world, who is saving you?
Who’s caring for your needs, desires and dreams?
Although the world around us may not like it we have to take care of ourselves to maintain our emotional, mental, and physical health. Don’t ever be afraid to say No. We don’t have to be at every luncheon, birthday party, or volunteer event. It’s okay to say “No, I’m going to spend some time relaxing and doing the things I enjoy.”
People may not understand but you don’t need anyone’s permission to care for yourself.
